More Ways, More Reasons to Give
Donors find themselves giving to the Annual Fund in different ways and for different reasons. Some give cash; others donate through their retirement funds. Some remember the days when they were cramming for exams, and others see the future of pharmacy in the making. However they give and whatever the motivation, alumni, faculty and friends remember the difference the School of Pharmacy has made in their life and are committed to its vision.
Crucial to the school's success, the Annual Fund supports graduate student fellowships and student scholarships, provides equipment and funds for newly hired faculty, and encourages faculty members to pursue their intellectual dreams.
Every gift makes a difference, and every difference is remembered.
Eric Ip ’06
Ip, assistant professor of clinical sciences at Touro University College of Pharmacy in Vallejo and head of Kaiser Permanente's diabetes management clinic in Mountain View, made his first gift to the school this year.
"Being an alumnus of the UCSF School of Pharmacy has opened so many doors for me personally and professionally," Ip says. "By donating to the Annual Fund, I am able to not only show my great appreciation to the school but also to make a powerful impact on our future pharmacists. Please join me in donating to the School of Pharmacy."
John Young BS ’54
Young, a Dean's Associate, gave to the Annual Fund through a retirement account. He took advantage of the charitable IRA rollover tax incentive program, which was a product of the Pension Protection Act of 2006, giving him an additional tax benefit. (This program ended Dec. 31, 2007; however, UCSF is optimistic that an enhanced plan will be passed by Congress in the near future.)
A proud Alumni Association Life Member, Young feels honored to contribute to the Annual Fund. "These activities are a way of giving back to the University for providing me with the education and foundation to develop programs to advance the practice of community pharmacy," Young says. "I would hope that all alumni would share my feelings and join me by making a contribution to the Annual Fund."
Roberta Wong ’83
Wong donated $10,000 to the Annual Fund on top of her $1,000 gift to the Jere Goyan Memorial Fund, which commemorates the former School of Pharmacy dean. Wong's extraordinary Annual Fund gift helps recognize the impact her UCSF education has had on her career; it is also a way of paying tribute to her upcoming 25th class reunion (scheduled for Nov. 1). Wong serves as a member of her homecoming reunion committee.
Class president her graduation year, Wong remembers her time at UCSF as a lot of hard work and a lot of fun, and she wants to make sure future classes enjoy a similar experience. "I gave my gift unrestricted," Wong says. "I want the school to be able to use it where they are short, whether it's providing better materials for the students or better experiences by being able to get well-known people to come lecture."
Marilyn Shreve
Shreve's employer will match her Dean's Associate gift to the Annual Fund, doubling her contribution to the School of Pharmacy and its many initiatives.
"Dean Mary Anne Koda-Kimble and the faculty at UCSF School of Pharmacy are visionary leaders who create a learning environment where new ideas and innovation can land; where thinking is valued; and, where ideas flow freely," says Shreve, assistant clinical professor (non-paid faculty).
Shreve knows her gift will support patient solutions that will shape the way health care is delivered in the 21st century. She says, "New thinking combined with a patient-centered approach to learning motivates pharmacy students to focus on patient solutions that are more than just 'the pill.' These solutions encourage and motivate patients to actively manage their treatment regimen, improve their mediation-taking behavior, and adopt healthy lifestyles."
