Parnassus Cellular Antenna Installations
UCSF Medical Center is proposing the installation of new cellular antennas at the Parnassus campus to give employees, patients, and visitors reliable wireless communication on campus.
Cellular coverage on the Parnassus Campus is poor in many areas due to the hill’s location in the shadow of the Sutro Heights cell towers. Physicians, staff, patients, and visitors often are not reachable by cell phone or lose service through dropped calls or dead zones due to this poor coverage. UCSF will be notifying neighbors about this project as more details come available.
Following installation of the new antennas, physicians, nurses, and other staff at the Parnassus campus will be able to communicate with one another to provide optimum patient care, while patients and visitors need reliable cell phone access to share important updates with friends and family.
These temporary cell phone antennas will provide an immediate improvement to the AT&T cellular phone coverage. The antennas must be placed in a location to cover the front and back of the hospital to provide better reception to those inside the building.
- Temporary microcellular sites (equipment cabinets and antennas) will be installed on the Ambulatory Care Center at 400 Parnassus Avenue and on the Environmental Health and Safety facility at Medical Center Way. These locations optimize coverage for both the north- and south-facing sides of the campus.
- Within one year, larger and more permanent microcellular sites will be installed at Millberry Union at 500 Parnassus and on the Environmental Health and Safety facility at Medical Center Way. These installations will improve cell service not only on campus, but also in the neighborhood surrounding the campus
