San Francisco General Hospital has been a UCSF patient-care partner since 1885. UCSF faculty and staff are responsible for providing all patient care at the "General," known for the quality of its Level 1 trauma services and pioneering programs in AIDS research and care, children's health, tuberculosis and many others. The city- and university-administered hospital is the source of care for the city's approximately 150,000 uninsured residents and a primary teaching setting for UCSF students from all four professional schools. Its surprising outdoor spaces and architectural details -- as well as its place in film lore ( it was the site for the famous hospital scenes in Steve McQueen's 1968 classic film "Bullitt") -- have made SFGH a beloved fixture in the city's landscape.
