San Francisco General Hospital has been a UCSF patient-care partner since 1885 when the fledgling campus, still scattered around downtown San Francisco, sent medical interns to what was then known as City and County Hospital. UCSF faculty and house staff physicians are now responsible for providing all patient care at the "General," known for the quality of its emergency services and pioneering programs in AIDS research and care, children's health, tuberculosis, and many others. The city- and university-administered hospital is also a primary teaching setting for UCSF students from all four professional schools, as well as the site for the famous hospital scenes in Steve McQueen's 1968 classic film "Bullitt."
