Historical photo of parnassus streetParnassus Avenue, the heart of UCSF's main campus, runs along the base of Mount Sutro, before utimately becoming Judah Street as it spills into San Francisco's Sunset District to the west. A transportation hub, Parnassus Avenue also serves as the main thoroughfare for thousands of UCSF employees, students, patients and visitors who frequent UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Children's Hospital as well as research laboratories, clinical facilities and offices. The street was much quieter in the 1920s when the original three buildings that became UCSF were still thought to be far from downtown San Francisco. The slope between the street and the original buildings served as the foundation for Clinics and Medical Sciences Buildings, both constructed in the 1950s.
