From urban wasteland to scientific wonderland, UCSF Mission Bay has transformed the southeastern quadrant of San Francisco since its groundbreaking in 1999. Three research buildings, a community center (complete with a rooftop pool) and student and faculty housing now rise on what, before being filled in nearly a century ago, was a shallow waterway. Next on the planning board is a cancer research building. When the campus is completed sometime in the next decade, it is expected to be home to approximately 9,000 faculty, students and staff.
