UCSF Laurel Heights occupies the former Fireman's Fund Insurance Building, which in turn was built atop Laurel Hill Cemetery (inset). Laurel Hill Cemetery, built in 1854 and closed in 1939, was the first of what became known as the city's "Big Four" cemeteries located in the Lone Mountain area. In its early days, it doubled as both a resting place and leisure space, where city dwellers would picnic and promenade among the marble tombs and elaborate monuments while enjoying the views of the "distant" city and the ocean beyond. That relaxing spirit has been captured in the current courtyard, where many of the building's 1300 UCSF employees often eat, read or enjoy an outdoor performance.
