Research laboratories at UCSF divide into three basic types: " wet, " "dry " and "clinical." Those like the one pictured here -- of which there are approximately 500 at UCSF -- usually conduct research on biological processes, the nuts and bolts of cells and the larger systems that govern health and disease. Dry laboratories are usually computer-dominated spaces where everything from molecular structure to the structure of the health care system are probed, elucidated and evaluated. Clinical laboratories conduct patient-based studies.
